Causes of Blepharospasm
While doctors aren’t sure what causes this type of eyelid twitching, they think that the condition may be from brain abnormalities in the area that controls muscle movement. They also believe that certain medications and exposure to bright light may cause blepharospasm in some people.
Symptoms of Blepharospasm
If you have blepharospasm, you may have any of these symptoms:
- Inability to control your eyelid muscles
- Blink more than normal
- Blink or wink forcefully and uncontrollably
- Unable to open your eyes once they are forced shut
- Dry eye
- Light sensitivity
- Burning sensation
- A gritty feeling in your eye
- Eye pain
- Tearing
You may have a higher risk for blepharospasm if you already have issues such as dry eye, light sensitivity, anxiety, high levels of stress, Parkinson’s disease, brain lesions, sleep disorders, facial palsy, a history of blepharospasm in your family, prior head trauma, Tourette’s syndrome, Myasthenia, or Meige syndrome. If you have one or more of these symptoms, talk to your eye doctor about treatment.
Treating Blepharospasm
Doctors can treat blepharospasm in several ways, including:
- Botox
- Tinted lenses
- Changing medications
- Surgery
Going to a psychotherapist may also help, as therapy can reduce stress and address anxiety issues, which can ultimately cause eye twitching.
