Bulging Eyes
One of the most common symptoms of thyroid eye disease is the appearance of bulging eyes. Sometimes referred to as a “bug-eyed” appearance, people who experience this symptom may also have a feeling of pressure or pain behind the eyes.
Swelling and Redness
In addition to a bulging eye appearance, people with thyroid eye disease may also have swelling and redness in the tissues that surround the eyes. The eyes may also feel puffy or heavy.
Eye Pain
People who have thyroid eye disease may experience a gritty sensation in the eyes that gets worse with eye movement. This can be especially painful while blinking.
Difficulty Closing the Eyes
Sometimes, changes in the muscles around the eyes are affected by thyroid eye disease, making it hard to fully close the eyes in order to blink or sleep. Changes to the eyelids due to bulging eyeballs can also make it harder for the muscles around the eyes to fully close the eyelids. The dryness and irritation associated with an inability to fully close the eyes can cause exposure-related issues such as corneal damage.
Sensitivity to Light
Many people who have thyroid eye disease find it uncomfortable to spend time in brightly lit environments. Prescription medication or over-the-counter medications can help reduce sensitivity to light as well as other symptoms mentioned here.
